Joseph Byrne

Number of years in the fine wine trade:
5 years.
Favourite area of wine interest & why:
When I first started working for the family business I was asked to improve and specialize in our range of South African wines. This was a pleasure since that country has so many great value wines with variety to suit the tastes of most people. Having the chance to visit the country personally when I was younger was a fantastic experience.
In contrast, after being part of the Champagne Academy in 2007 I have developed a great interest in champagne, particularly in seeking out the smaller, lesser known producers.
Most memorable wine moment:
The Academie de champagne 2007. An amazing week, drinking some of the finest quality Champagnes available and eating the very best French cuisine. Though it wasn’t easy, with an exam at the end of the week and a blind tasting, I was ecstatic to pass. Though they were unable to confirm it, it was believed that at the age of 20, I was the youngest to pass at that time.
Favourite food & wine match:
A home cooked roast beef dinner with a good quality red Bordeaux is hard to beat.
Interests outside the business:
I enjoy dining out and just generally socialising with friends. Walking is a keen interest and I also play Sunday morning football.
