Il Cascinone ‘Camillona’ Sauvignon Blanc - ITALY

From Il Cascinone’s prized hilltop Camillona site, this Sauvignon has ripe fruit with delicate elderflower characters. A fine, elegant style of Sauvignon with citrus fruit characters lifted by ripe gooseberry and floral notes. Zesty acidity balances perfectly with the considerable weight on the palate, and crisp grapefruit flavours make this an attractive and characterful wine. Vegetarian & Vegan

GENETIE Bourgogne Blanc ‘Illuminé’ - FRANCE

A classic Chardonnay from Southern Burgundy - fine buttery and floral notes on the nose and a wine of substance and finesse on the palate. Some creamy textural notes up front reveal the discreet presence of oak, whilst on the finish there is some underlying minerality and a hint of citrus zestiness that provides long lasting flavours.

‘On Reflection’ Chenin Blanc - SOUTH AFRICA

A bright, affirmative Chenin Blanc from Paarl’s older bush vines is lifted further by 10% Semillon from ancient vines in Franschhoek. These combine for a rich, punchy, textural attack which mellows to a wealth of stone fruits, citrus and a touch of lime leaf from the Semillon on the finish.

Caparrone Abruzzo Passerina - ITALY

A taut, fresh and lightly floral white from Passerina, an indigenous variety from Italy’s Adriatic coast. Fresh and citrusy nose with aromas of lemon zest and grapefruit. The palate has ripe stone fruit characters balanced by zesty acidity - giving an appealing texture and finish. Vegetarian & Vegan

The Last Stand Chardonnay - AUSTRALIA

This always shows prominent tangerine notes on the nose, and this vintage also shows intense grapefruit, lime and hints of spice. Refreshingly unoaked, citrus and white peach flavours combine with a zesty fresh acidity and a clean, bright and linear mineral finish. Vegetarian & Vegan

REDS

Les Volets Malbec, Pays de la Haute Vallée de l’Aude - FRANCE

The cool Haute Vallée de l’Aude creates a fresh and intense expression of Malbec quite apart from those from the New World. The first notes on the nose are of crushed blueberries which then develop to reveal an intriguing bitter-sweet character of crème de cassis with a touch of underlying parma violets. Fine red-fruits fill the mouth; cranberries and a touch of cocoa nib on the lifted finish.

‘Revenant’ Cabernet Sauvignon/Cinsault - SOUTH AFRICA

Revenant - One that returns after death or a long absence. Revenant celebrates the glorious rebirth of tradition and the blend in The Western Cape of South Africa. Unfurling an abundance of vibrant red fruit in the glass such as red berries and blueberries, the wine shows hints of perfume and dark chocolate. Lucha Rocosa Carignan - CHILE

A dry farmed Carignan from vineyards nestled into Curico’s coastal mountains. Lucha Rocosa means rocky struggle and refers to the vines struggle to find water and minerals in dry conditions. This wine is edgy, with good acidity and tannins but also has a lovely purity of blackberry and mulberry fruit. It has a long, fresh finish leaving you wanting more! Vegetarian & Vegan

La Reine de l’Arenite, Fleurie - FRANCE

Pretty, floral, elegant and aromatic. A spot on Fleurie! A heady perfume of freshly picked irises and peonies drift above the crushed berry fruit nose. Percheron Chenin Blanc/Viognier - SOUTH AFRICA

Vibrant and aromatic with delicious subtle perfumed aromas with white peach and hints of jasmine on the nose. On the palate it has tight, white, fleshy stone fruit and fresh apricot flavours that balances the sandy texture. Bright acidity and minerality help to deliver a deliciously flavoursome and characteristic wine.

Cuvée Jean-Paul Sec - FRANCE

This is a deliciously aromatic, bright and zingy dry white. There’s a fresh nose of lime, basil, freshly cut green grass and guavas. The medium-bodied palate continues with more green fruits and flowers; figs and tobacco flowers. Vegetarian & Vegan

Il Meridione Grillo - ITALY

Percheron Old Vine Cinsault - SOUTH AFRICA

Andes Peaks Merlot - CHILE

A fabulous value, classic merlot from the Central Valley. Deep ruby-red in colour, with a nose that presents aromas of red fruits, such as strawberries, some spice notes, and a light touch of coffee. The palate is nicely balanced with sweet, well-rounded tannins, good volume, and a long finish.

Vega Piedra Rioja - SPAIN

2018 Domaine du Monteillet ‘Les Hauts du Monteillet’, Blanc     COLLINES RHODANIENNES, FRANCE

The majority is Viognier, with the balance made up of Clairette Blanc and a touch of Rousanne. Peach, orange blossom and vanilla on the nose with a charming bright fruit palate. Interestingly there is a salty, tangy finish which provides real interest. Handpicked in the early morning whilst the skins are still turgid, this wine spent 11 months in French oak ‘demi-muids’

2018 Winterhoek Sauvignon Blanc     CERES PLATEAU, SOUTH AFRICA

100% fruit from the unique Ceres Plateau appellation. Stone-fruit and green melon with subtle oak nuances on the nose. The palate is mineral and citrus driven with struck match and nutty lees flavours. A fresh almost limey acidity contributes to the wine’s length and gives balance to the creamy texture of the barrel fermented component. Vegetarian

2017/18 Cavit Rulendis Pinot Grigio    TRENTINO, ITALY

This new release from Cavit is a fine, linear style of Pinot Grigio.  Aromas of honeyed, ripe stone fruit with citrus and lightly spicy notes. The palate is complex with lime, citrus characters balanced by a spicy minerality, structure and length. Showing some development, but with the potential to age for 5 years or more.

2016 Domaine Mittnacht Freres Pinot Blanc    ALSACE, FRANCE

A family-run estate begun in 1958, Mittnacht Freres is a 20-hectare estate that produces expressive, beautifully made wines from traditional Alsace varietals. This Pinot Blanc has aromas of apples, pears and quince. The apple, pear, spicy mineral notes and ginger all combine to create a balanced and highly delicious wine. 

2018 Messmer Made in Pfalz Weissburgunder      PFALZ, GERMANY

A delicious Pinot Blanc from this family estate in the Pfalz region of south-west Germany. Delicately floral with aromas of stone fruit and hints of white spice. It has a generous mouthfeel, with delicious ripe lemon peel characters and a mineral finish.

2015 Jose Zuccardi Appelation Malbec     MENDOZA, ARGENTINA

Sebastian Zuccardi made this wine to honour his father José. A traditional Malbec with black fruit notes at the fore. Intense red black in colour, José Zuccardi is complex in nose, highlighting ripe black and red fruit aromas with subtle spicy notes. Firm and mature tannins that give structure to the wine, but fresh and elegant due to its great acidity. Vegetarian

2016/17 Le Riche ‘Richesse’    STELLENBOSCH, SOUTH AFRICA

Le Riche is the master of modern Cape Cabernet. Restrained but appealing on the nose with typical red fruit aromas of plum, cherries and milled pepper are balanced by an aroma of finely ground graphite found in Left Bank Bordeaux. The palate is a masterpiece of blending - hugely appealing with juicy mouth-filling flavours of red berries, plums and smoky hints balanced with a fine, soft tannic structure and rounded finish. 2016/17 Gomez Cruzado Rioja Crianza    RIOJA, SPAIN

The Tempranillo grapes are sourced from vineyards planted in the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains, and from the lower course of the Najerilla river. The Garnacha vines are planted near the higher course of the Najerilla (near Badarán). Plum and bramble aromas with savoury, lightly spicy hints. An approachable, warm and gentle Crianza with dark fruits and supple tannins - and more toasty, savoury hints developing on the long finish.

2016/17 Innocent Bystander, Pinot Noir    YARRA VALLEY, AUSTRALIA

This Pinot Noir has beautiful fruit which shines through its velvety mouthfeel and soft, savoury tannins. With aromas of boysenberries, cherry and cranberry. Baked earth, dried spice, juniper and fresh bay tree notes also come through on the nose. On the palate, dark fruits, a velvety mouthfeel and soft savoury tannins make a lovely finish. 2011 Les Calèches de Lanessan, Haut-Médoc    BORDEAUX, FRANCE

A beautifully evolved Médoc. A savoury and complex nose leads to a vibrant and herbaceous palate. Quite delicate tannins make for a very appealing, approachable wine. Planted on deep Garonne gravel beds twenty years ago, the thirteen hectares of vineyards that produce this wine lie between those of two Cru Classé Saint-Julien estates: Château Beychevelle (4ème cru) and Château Gruaud Larose (2ème cru) Vegetarian

2016/17 Michele Chiarlo ‘16 Mesi Le Orme’ Barbera d’Asti   PIEDMONTE, ITALY

The ‘Chiarlo’ philosophy “is to capture the terroir” and with judicious use of oak they develop some wines for ageing and some which can be enjoyed earlier. An elegant and intense Barbera, bursting with notes of ripe cherry and redcurrant, layered with a touch of spice. Harmonious, rounded and beautifully balanced through to a lovely savoury finish. Vegetarian 

2016 La Chapelle de Bébian Rouge    COTEAUX DU LANGUEDOC

Named for the 12th century chapel on the property, La Chapelle Rouge is made from a blend of younger vine Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault planted on clay limestone and sandy clay soils. It is very Mediterranean on the nose, with black fruits interlaced with notes of the local vegetation, thyme, fennel, rosemary all wild flowers. It is medium to full-bodied on the palate, with an explosion of blackcurrant and blackberry backboned by firm but elegant tannins.

A bit of a change from doing an Andrew’s Six Box this year. The tiny violin came out when in his own words ‘I’ve not had chance to visit enough places this year’. With that in mind we decided to come up with a ‘Shop Six Box’, a collaboration of wines selected by each staff member with their stand outs from over the last year.

Alpha Box & Dice ‘Zaptung’ Glera NV - Australia

ANDREW – Back in June we had a dinner with the head of New World wine buying for Boutinot, when deciding which fizz to start with we asked him which would work better? This one we’ve including in the case, which is, for most intents and purposes, Aussie Prosecco, or something a little more classical? His response was “**** that, the Zaptung is way more exciting.” A glass full of joyful froth, AB&D Zaptung is Glera but not quite as we know it. Amongst the superabundance of bubbles, there is a textural streak bringing all their festivity and chaotic stone fruit into line. An unassailably positive marvel, this will delight even the most fastidious punter.

2018 Wildeberg Sauvignon Blanc - Stellenbosch, South Africa

JOE - On our honeymoon back in September we had a two night stay at the very small but fantastic estate just on the outskirts of Franschhoek (more information later in the Newsletter). All three of the whites they produce are stunning, but I had to settle on just one to go in this case. Think Sancerre rather than New World. A wave of rich tropical, leafy notes on the nose sway to a broad palate of tight lime-leaf, bay and silky texture with a super-bright, naturally acid finish.

2017 Gomez Cruzado Blanco 2 Ano - Rioja, Spain

JAYNE & KATE – After a difficult day in the office, enjoying the harder part of the job at a trade tasting, we were discussing highlights of the day and wines which we really enjoyed. With over 500 wines to try it’s not as easy as it sounds. The full range of wines from Gomez Cruzado really stood out as exceptional! It seems the two of us both prefer full flavoured whites and this was the stand out from the tasting. A Burgundian style which reflects the land, rather than purely varietal expression. Ripe lemon and stone fruit aromas with toasty hints. The broad and textural palate has bright citrus characters, with fresh acidity and white spice on the long finish.

2017 Casa Ferreirinha Vinha Grande Tinto - Douro, Portugal

LAURA – Chatting with Matt one Friday afternoon discussing what to drink over the weekend, he came up with this wine having recently enjoyed a bottle of it himself. A lazy Sunday afternoon spending time with family and enjoying a roast rib of beef this wine fit perfectly. The last of the bottle was enjoyed in front of the log fire in my pyjamas. This wine stood out as something special at a great price, one we will certainly be drinking again, deep ruby colour and intense aromas of flowers, strawberry, and raspberry fruit, a touch of black pepper and well-integrated oak. The voluminous palate has well-integrated acidity, velvety tannins, a delicate minerality and notes of red berries. The finish is elegant and long.

Tabalí ‘Micas’ Carmenere - Cachapoal, Chile

SIMON - Extremely fortunate to have visited this winery back in July, where we had a tasting and this wine stood out for quality and value. From a vineyard planted in 1947, from Cachapoal valley, a traditional area and one of the best in Chile for producing Carmenère. Very complex and elegant nose, with notes of cloves and other spices, as well as black fruit and a hint of chocolate. The mouth reveals, smooth tannins and a delicious acidity that is in perfect balance with the fruit and French oak. The finish is long, characterful, elegant and very persistent, and long.

Niepoort Ruby Dum NV - Douro, Portugal

MATT – It’s no secret that I’m a great proponent of all things Niepoort. Whilst their portfolio is encrusted with jewels, it is Ruby Dum that really sparkles when it comes to good value. ‘Balance’ is the key to any Niepoort wine, and Ruby Dum is no different. Favouring a more elegant style than English port houses, this bright and youthful ruby port still delivers everything you’d expect -rich dark fruits, silky mouthfeel, and a smooth, long lasting finish. Perfect with chocolate, soft cheeses, and fresh red fruits - this an extremely quaffable port guaranteed to suit everyone after your Christmas meal, or maybe a week before it.

NV Lallier R.014 Brut Champagne - CHAMPAGNE, FRANCE

R.014, represents Récolte or Vintage 2014 with 84% of the wine selected from the 2014 vintage and a small proportion (16%) made up of reserve wines from previous vintages (2005, 2008 and 2012). Attractive aromas of fresh fruits, citrus fruit and honey. Well bal-anced with good structure and an appealing freshness.

2018 Pascal Jolivet ‘Les Caillottes’ Sancerre Blanc LOIRE, FRANCE

Full bodied and deeply mineral in flavour, this is an incredibly elegant wine from 40 year old vines in single vineyards. The nose is complex, with notes of lemon zest and citrus fruits, leading to a creamy yet structured palate and fresh, long finish.

2018 ‘Assyrtiko’ by Gaia Wild Ferment - SANTORINI, GREECE

An incredibly complex and intense wine. It's bone dry on the palate but carries refined notes of preserved lemons. A special feature of most Assytiko from Santorini is that despite their white colour they behave like red wines! Keep the wine for 2-3 years under prop-er cellar conditions and it will undergo profound changes. Its mineral dimension will subside while the fruity and honey flavours will envelop its body.

2014 Vallet Frères, Auxey-Duresses - BURGUNDY, FRANCE

A unique and expressive white Burgundy. With aromas of fresh almonds and earthy blossom, this wine is very supple and nicely balanced with good length. Complex and fine, this wine has a great following and will benefit from decanting before serving.

2017 DeMorgenzon Reserve Chenin Blanc - STELLENBOSCH, SOUTH AFRICA

This show stopping white displays effusive aromas of white flower, stone fruit, honey and toast which erupt into opulent flavours of pear, orange blossom, caramel and spice. It’s a world class wine offering that strikes a brilliant balance between lush fruit and crisp, mouth-watering acidity.

2015 Kloster Eberbach ‘Crescentia’ Höllenberg Spätburgunder - RHEINGAU, GERMANY

A sublime Burgundian-style Pinot Noir from Assmanns-hausen, where this grape has been cultivated since the early 16th century. Ripe, wild, red berry fruit with lightly spicy notes. The palate has redcurrant, bramble and red cherry fruit, and refreshing juicy acidity balancing the fine tannins.

2015 Boutinot ‘Les Deux Barriques’, Cairanne - RHÔNE, FRANCE

The hallmark of ‘Les Deux Barriques’ is finesse not power. Explosive aromas and flavours of astonishingly ripe red fruits interlaced with mocha and seductively sweet oaky nuances crescendo in an enticingly smooth and silky palate of intricacy and surprising delicacy.

2007 Valenciso Reserva ’10 Años Después’ - RIOJA, SPAIN

Another exceptional Reserva from Valenciso - released 10 years after the vintage, following maturation in a combination of concrete and Russian oak. Complex balsamic notes, intense black fruit, fine grained beautifully polished tannins and incredible freshness.

2015 Montresor Amarone della Valpolicella del Fondatore - VENETO, ITALY

A complex nose showing notes of black cherry, plum, violets, coffee and raisins. The palate is smooth and rounded, with a richly-textured mid-palate and a medley of spice, dried fruit characters and supple tannins. The wine remains elegant and nicely balanced, being well-integrated and rich, but with delicate floral notes and a long and complex, dry finish.

2015 Meerlust Rubicon - STELLENBOSCH, SOUTH AFRICA

Incredibly dense purple-ebony core with very slight gradation at the rim. The nose is brood¬ing, dark bramble fruit, cassis, plum, in-cense and liquorice, slowly offering cigar box, crushed stone and subtle oak spice. On the palate the wine is concentrated yet re-strained with dark fruit flavours of pastille, mulberry and dark chocolate, all held in an intricate lattice of polished sleek grape tannin. Still very young yet approachable, this Rubicon promises a long future of maturation and enjoyment.

2015 Pulenta Gran Corte VII - MENDOZA, ARGENTINA

In colour, the wine is an attractive, intense red with dark tones. It expresses fruit notes of plum, cherry, and dark fruits, with several spices like thyme, oregano, and black pepper, given by some of the components of the blend, which make the wine delicate and complex. On the palate it is elegant but structured, with a persistent finish making it a wine hard to forget.

2012 Château Cantemerle - BORDEAUX, FRANCE

Deep ruby in colour, with cool, fresh blackcurrant and black cherry, hints of camphor and blackcurrant leaf, and a touch of sweet vanil-la. The palate is pure, slender and cool, supported by moderate levels of ripe and integrated tannins. The floral edge of the 2012 vintage shines through and the perfumed fruit core is at its best, offering a wine that is drinking very well now.
